Event Title
Climbing Mount Everest: Larry Nielson, Interviewed by Paul Madison
Description
Western Athletics Historian Paul Madison interviews Western Athletic Hall of Famer Larry Nielson about his historic climb of Mount Everest. On May 7, 1983, Nielson, along with three other Americans and a Nepalese Sherpa, summited the peak from the southeast ridge located on the Nepal-China border. Nielson was the first American to climb Mount Everest without using bottled oxygen. Nielson's achievement is one of the dozens of stories Paul Madison has recounted from the history of Western Athletics in his "Carver Memories" project as Western Athletics Historian. In his project Madison has drawn upon the decades of experience and records he accumulated over his nearly 50-year career as WWU Sports Information Director, and he has also used collections and support from both University Archives and Records Management and Special Collections.
