Abstract

I spent my time at The NOAH Center working in the clinic to support the veterinary staff during their scheduled procedures, mostly for the spaying and neutering of cats. I focused on the proper washing and sanitation of the surgical tools used in the clinic. I washed the blood off the tools first, then operated equipment like an ultrasonic cleaner to remove pathogens like Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) that they may have been exposed to. I removed blood, fat, and the occasional clipped cat ear from the surgical drapes and properly washed them. The drapes were used to hold clean surgical tools which were wrapped tightly inside to create the surgical packs. The autoclaves were the final step which were used to remove any bacteria using steam and pressure. Each surgical pack had a piece of indicator tape that would turn black after being run through the autoclave. Each pack was also marked with the date and which autoclave it was run through so if the surgical packs were not properly sanitized the staff would know which autoclave wasn’t getting up to pressure.
