Use of functional behavior assessments in education

Description

A functional behavior assessment is the process of collecting a variety of data in order to determine the function of a behavior (why the behavior is occurring). Gathering this information is essentially in designing an appropriate intervention in order to alter this behavior in some way. Often times, a functional behavior assessment is employed in order to collect more information about a behavior that is problematic in some way, meaning that it is a behavior that creates some sort of socially significant challenge for the individual exhibiting such behavior. Data collected during this process may include informal observations, interviews and numerical data (related to frequency, duration, latency or intensity). Data is focused on collecting information about the antecedents to a behavior (what occurs before the behavior happens), the behavior itself, and the consequences of the behavior (what occurs after the behavior happens). In my project, this process was employed to analyze a student’s problem behaviors in a school setting. Utilizing this process in education allows educators to make data-based decisions when addressing a student’s problem behaviors, making their efforts more effective.
