Depletion Force Purification and Silver Overgrowth on Gold Nano-Bipyramids

Description
There has been research on using depletion force to purify nanoparticles. In my research I investigate the effects of depletion force to purify gold nano-bipyramids (NBs) and how it effects silver overgrowth on the NBs. After synthesizing the NBs there is a large presence of impurities. It is necessary to remove these impurities before undergoing a silver overgrowth. I have tested two solutions, hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and hexadecyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC), for their effectiveness in purifying NBs. The process for the depletion force method is done by transferring the NBs to a concentrated solution of CTAB or CTAC then waiting for at least 24 hours as the NBs fall out of solution while the impurities remain in solution. Using CTAC has been the most effective in purifying NBs without damaging them. I am trying to prove that the NBs being immersed in a high concentration of CTAC will not cause the silver overgrowths to grow in a different shape than before the purification.
