Tire wear particles (TWP) are becoming widely recognized as a source of contamination in aquatic systems. The most common way TWP enter aquatic systems is via tires wearing down on roads and the resulting particles being washed into the environment in stormwater runoff. The chemicals that leach off the TWP have had known toxic effects on aquatic organisms and are a mixture of many chemicals, some of which are unknown degradation products. The work proposed here aims to determine if the duration of leach time affects the toxicity of TWP to mysid shrimp. This study will deploy standard marine toxicity testing on mysids using leachate leached for a series of times (i.e., 1 hour, 6 hours. 12 hours, 24 hours, up to 1 month). This work will add to the growing knowledge base on tire toxicity in aquatic systems, which could potentially be an issue for marine systems globally.
