Description
My partner and I did a study project regarding the Whatcom READS annual campaign for our public relations case study course. The Whatcom County Library system has established an annual county-wide program that encourages everyone to read and discuss the same book. The campaign is called Whatcom READS, and every year a new book is chosen by the Whatcom READS organizers. Throughout the community, everyone is encouraged to partake in reading the book and participate in the special programs and events that follow the book's theme. In 2008, the Whatcom county library system and Whatcom Community College were awarded grants from Washington State Library to establish the READS program. Despite the pandemic, Whatcom READS has shifted some of their community activity to a virtual setting with some room for in-person events. Starting the program back up after June 2021 was a challenge as the staff needed to collaborate together to learn what virtual events would work for their audience and what things would bring in more attendees.
