Event Title

Evocation of place in music: travel observations from three regions of South America

Description

Using three examples gathered while traveling in South America, this presentation looks at the profound regional differences that characterize some of the music found on the continent. Looking at settlement history, geography and cultural diffusion, I will first review a number of factors that help us understand the style of music found in particular regions of Colombia and Brazil. Then, borrowing an example from central Chile, I will demonstrate through an interactive activity how musical styles affect the evocation of place.
