Abstract
This summer I worked as the Ivy Program Intern for the Whatcom Million Trees Project (WMTP) in Bellingham, Washington. WMTP is a 501(c)3 certified nonprofit based in Whatcom County. Their mission is to plant and protect over one million trees in Whatcom County, as well as foster a sense of community around a love of trees by providing opportunities and guidance to connect community members to direct, hands-on action. To reach this goal of planting and protecting one million trees, WMTP holds volunteer work parties to plant and care for future forests, as well as remove ivy and other invasive species that threaten mature trees. They also seek to protect trees using an advocacy approach. This includes, for example, pushing for new development projects to ensure the safety of as many mature trees as possible when clearing land for new buildings.
