Abstract
During the summer of 2025, I had the opportunity to return for a third season working with Puget Sound Express (PSE), a family-owned whale-watching company based in the Salish Sea region. This experience deepened my passion for marine ecosystems, science communication, and vessel operations. PSE’s rich history, rooted in three generations of the Hanke family, and their commitment to both environmental stewardship and guest experience, created a work environment that was both educational and inspiring. As a deckhand aboard the Glacier Spirit, I developed critical skills in marine safety, public outreach, and whale identification. I also gained hands-on experience with vessel navigation and emergency preparedness. Beyond technical growth, this role affirmed my desire to pursue a career connected to the ocean. The most rewarding aspect was witnessing the joy and wonder in passengers experiencing marine wildlife—often for the first time—and playing a role in fostering their appreciation for the Salish Sea. This internship not only supported the academic goals of my Environmental Science degree, but also provided personal fulfillment, professional growth, and a sense of purpose that will guide my future endeavors.
