Abstract
Learning, growth, and motivation to learn interact in complex and interesting ways. Current research such as Self Determination Theory looks at how values, identities, and social interaction shapes the ways student learn and grow. The "Beach Investigators" program has been developed to use this research in an attempt to motivate student to continue exploring their environment with a focus on the intertidal zone. Activities such as journaling, sketching, and photography will be used to teach student how to explore their environment. The end goal is to enable and motivate student to continue exploring their environment beyond the scope of this course.
