Synthesis and Evaluation of Sortase A Inhibitors

Research Mentor(s)

Description

Each year, an increasing number of antibiotics become less effective in combating infectious bacterial diseases as a result of the prolonged and wide spread use of these drugs as treatments. As a result of an increasing number of drug resistant strains of bacteria, at least 2 million people in the United States acquire infectious diseases from drug resistant bacteria each year that are potentially fatal according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Although combating drug resistance is a multifaceted strategy, the key to resolving this issue is through the development of new antibiotics. The preliminary evaluation of novel epoxide derivative drugs targeted against sortase A involved in the pathogenesis of the foodborne bacteria Listeria monocytogenes will be presented.
