Ecological Reserve Stewardship and Citizen Science, a working model.
Presentation Abstract
Management of Ecologically sensitive areas cannot always be assured by government departments perennially short of funding. Our model of the Race Rocks Ecological Reserve in the Strait of Juan de Fuca shows how community stewardship by an educational institution with forward looking leadership can successfully fund and manage a marine ecological research centre. The engagement in citizen science by committed volunteers, staff and students, as well as facilitation of on-site research by outside institutions has been the outcome. http://www.racerocks.ca
