10 principles designing for watershed health
Presentation Abstract
Considered one of the most rigorous stormwater certifications in the world, Salmon-safe's standards are based on 10 principles for developing ecologically functional urban sites. The principles include: 1) connecting to watershed health and specific restoration and recovery strategies; 2) integration of habitats and restoring degraded habitat; 3) start with site ecology; 4) protect water quality and habitat during construction; 5) manage water at the source; 6) design for the land and consider each part of a project as a contributing element to the site; 70 prioritize water conservation; 8) care for land over time encouraging consistent post development land management and operations; 9) clean water for salmon encouraging low impact development and integrated pest management; 10) design learning landscapes which can contribute to behavior change.
