Washington's aquatic reserves: strategic direction, stewardship, and supporting science
Presentation Abstract
Washington's Aquatic Reserves: Strategic direction, stewardship, and supporting science. The state Aquatic Reserves system is currently composed of eight reserves distributed broadly in the Salish Sea. The program has built capacity through inclusive planning, strong community and Tribal relationships, supporting citizen science, targeted research, and stewardship grants. The strategic direction of the program emphasizes supporting scientific research and monitoring, and building on existing initiatives and partnerships. The reserves network will only be able grow with regional planning, significant external partnerships and public support. We are exploring ways to develop capacity, extend networks to other managing agencies, and do effective public engagement.
