Data management at the Hakai Institute

Presentation Abstract

The Hakai Institute is a scientific research institution that conducts long-term research at remote locations on the coastal margin of British Columbia, Canada. Oceanographic research at Hakai spans the Strait of Georgia, Johnstone Strait and the central coast of BC. Since 2009, Hakai has accumulated data from 1000s of visits to 100s of oceanographic sampling sites. Hakai also helps manage real-time data from sensor nodes deployed at sites in Alaska and BC. Hakai employs a combination of commercial software products and services, open source software and custom developed solutions to manage data and metadata. During this talk, Hakai will share lessons learned while choosing, adopting and developing appropriate standards and software solutions. We look forward to learning more about how others have approached data management and discussing opportunities to increase data sharing.
