Presentation Abstract
The goal of this program is to allow consumers to recognize which seafood they buy at retail or in restaurants comes from the Salish Sea. By knowing this, they can taste for themselves the difference, and ask for it again if they like it. As things stand now, there is no way for consumers to know if the crabs, halibut, prawns, or salmon come from the Salish Sea, the coast, or Alaska. If they know for themselves what is harvested here, they are likely to work to protect the habitat our seafood comes from. It is basic marketing, but with a much larger goal: saving the fragile ecosystem and with it the Southern Resident Orcas. We have distributed this medallion for the past 2 years, with some effect. Salish Sea Certified is a recognizable insignia which is offered to fishers, processors, and retailers that shows it represents the following attributes: 1. is harvested within the geographic boundaries of the Salish Sea, and 2. Is harvested sustainably using approved methods as follows: a. selective with limited bycatch mortality b. from a fishery that can be shown to be well regulated and sustainable c. uses best practices as laid out by Salish Sea Certified and attested to by individual fishers. Salish Center for Sustainable Fishing Methods will conduct annual audits of medallion recipients and make them available to the public.
