Abstract
This research was set to find the best practices for both the hiring and retaining of teachers of color in the public education preK-12 grade system. This qualitative research included interviews from district leaders as well as teachers of color from around the state of Washington. This two-fold approach allowed for the comparing and contrasting of the experiences of teachers of color with the strategies school districts have implemented to support the recruiting, hiring, and retaining of a diverse teaching force. As a result of the research, it was found that school districts are making efforts to diversify the teaching force with such strategies as “grow your own” practices, with the support of an induction and mentoring program, with the opportunity to participate in one or more affinity groups. Even with the efforts made by school districts across the state of Washington, not all teachers of color feel the intended supports to the level one would expect. The commitment to a diverse teaching force is ongoing and will continue to rely on the mindset of those involved in the process of hiring and retaining teachers (which is all of us) to commit to a safe and positive environment for current teachers of color and future teachers of color in our communities.
