Our History
The idea for Occam’s Razor was first conceived in 2009 when two students realized that there was no medium available for WWU undergraduates to publish their academic work. OR founder Chris Crow had produced a publication-worthy paper and was disappointed by the absence of scholarly work being shared with a broader campus audience. From this general concern arose the stark realization that the issue extended to all undergraduates; how could one use their class work to further discussions of academia within the greater WWU community? How could one stand out from other graduates in their field? What does one do with an exceptional paper and countless hours of research after the grades are posted? The answer was simple: Occam’s Razor.
The first two volumes—printed in 2011 and 2012— were each comprised of four essays and only reflected work from the humanities disciplines. By the fourth volume, the journal had expanded to include submissions from the STEM fields. In 2014 OR was formally admitted into the Student Publication Council. Each year since, the quality, funding, and readership have grown to its present, interdisciplinary state. As we look forward, we are eager to continue expanding the diversity of both our readership and submissions to represent all of the inspiring academic work being done across campus.
