What is Environmental Justice within the Salish Sea? A panel discussion among government and community partners on the role of environmental justice in Washington

Presentation Abstract

Diversity, equity, inclusion (DEI) and environmental justice (EJ) within environmental work in the Salish Sea region has become more prominent over the past several years. DEI-focused sessions at Salish Sea Ecosystem Conferences began in 2018, and have covered a range of topics including internal strategic and organizational planning - such as recruitment and retention of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC), internal policies to create inclusive cultures, and integration and operationalization of DEI and EJ into organizational goals and programs. This panel aims to build upon these previous conversations by providing an open discussion from government partners, including Tribes, and community organizations on how DEI practices are essential for building equitable partnerships and furthering regional EJ goals. Panelists will provide their own understanding of EJ definitions and best practices, and share examples of how they see EJ integrated within their own work. For example, Washington State legislatures recently passed the Healthy Environment For All (HEAL) Act, which requires several Washington state agencies to integrate EJ into their strategic planning. Attendees will be invited to ask questions and share their own ideas of how environmental work across the Salish Sea can continue to advance DEI and EJ.
