Using Scenarios to Explore Puget Sound Futures and Build Resilience (Panel)
Presentation Abstract
In 2018, the Puget Sound Partnership’s Leadership Council made the “Beyond 2020” resolution. This resolution calls for, “a future in which generations can hear the calls of whales, witness the spawning of salmon, taste locally harvested shellfish, swim in clean water, and experience the unique cultural fabric that ties our region together.” It includes a thriving economy, sustainable farms and forests, and human communities with high quality of life and the businesses that support them. While the vision is clear, it is not always easy to know how to achieve it. The Puget Sound region is undergoing rapid changes in ways we can anticipate and understand and in ways we cannot predict. There are a myriad of moving parts that impact how the Sound functions ecologically and how the people living around the Sound affect it and themselves. Entwined in that are unexpected events such as a pandemic, an unexpected large flood, or a sudden increase in wildfires. The Future Scenarios project will help us systematically explore how the future might unfold in the Puget Sound region so we can: clearly communicate about the implications of our current choices to our future goals; identify strategies that are resilient across a range of futures; test our current ideas about how best to achieve our vision for the future; and adaptively manage recovery strategies and actions in time to make a difference The project is a collaborative, multi-disciplinary effort that will create a Business-As-Usual scenario to help us understand what may happen if we continue as we are and 2 - 4 additional exploratory scenarios to help us engage with potential alternatives. Scenarios will use spatial/temporal modeling (i.e., land cover and water flow modeling) through the Common Futures Envision Platform as well as narratives created by a multi-disciplinary Advisory Group.
